Preparing GST returns
Prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B from your entries, reconcile GSTR-2B, apply the credit rules and file.
Updated 15 October 2026
What you’ll do: take a month’s GST from your books to a filed return.
Who can do this: accountants prepare. Whoever holds the GST portal login files there and records the ARN in Books.
Steps
- In Dexta Books, open GST returns under Tax and pick the month (and the GSTIN, if you have branches).
- On GSTR-1, check your sales and download Portal JSON to upload through the GST portal.
- On GSTR-2B, upload the file you downloaded from the GST portal and match each line: Accept, Link to bill, or Post held input tax.
- Check the credit rules: Unpaid 180 days (rule 37), Rule 37A (suppliers who didn’t file GSTR-3B; Reverse the credit), and the rule 42 card on GSTR-3B for common credit.
- On GSTR-3B, click Post set-off entry. On Payment, click Make challan for anything due in cash, then Record payment once paid.
- File the return on gst.gov.in with your DSC or EVC. Back on Filing, click Filed on the portal and enter the ARN the portal gave you.
Good to know
- Books doesn’t file returns on the portal for you yet: it prepares them, makes the JSON and keeps the ARN.
- Each return shows Not started, Saved, Filed (with the ARN) or Not accepted.
- The same page has GSTR-9, DRC-03, ISD (GSTR-6), ITC-04 and export and IGST refunds.
- E-invoices and e-way bills go through your Masters India account. See E-invoices and bank feeds.
- Close the month with Close on the GSTR-3B tab once it’s filed.
