Setting up Books

Add your company, its tax profile and accounts, post opening balances, and work through the set-up checklist.

Updated 15 October 2026

What you’ll do: get a company’s books ready for its first entry.

Who can do this: a Company Admin in Dexta Books. Accountants help with masters and entries.

Steps

  1. In Dexta Books, open Subscriber settings, the Companies tab, and click Add a company. Type the Company name and click Add company.
  2. Open the company, then Settings and the Tax profile card. Fill in the Legal name, GST registration, GSTIN, State, PAN and TAN (for TDS you deduct), and the bank details to print on invoices. Click Save tax profile.
  3. Open Chart of accounts and click Add standard accounts to start from a ready list. Use Add account for your own.
  4. Open Opening balances. Set The books start here on, enter your trial balance, click Check, then Post opening balances.
  5. Go back to Overview and work through the Setting up Books checklist: invoice numbering, customers and vendors, items, opening dues and stock, fixed assets, the compliance calendar, your income tax regime and daily backups. Each shows Done or To do.

Good to know

  • Coming from Tally? Import from Tally under Control brings in masters and balances. It’s for Company Admins.
  • Got it wrong? Undo the opening balances takes them back out before you go further.
  • Add a branch GSTIN on the Branch GSTINs card. Add earlier or later years under Months and years.
  • Payroll, statutory deposits and expense claims from Dexta Pay and Dexta Spend post into Books by themselves.
  • Roles in Books are Company Admin, Accountant, CA / Reviewer (reviews and signs off, can’t post) and Viewer.
